Default hmm odd

I play alot of games, from sports, to fps, to now rpg.

I really like this game, and i'm trying to balance my time between this and Battlefield 2 and madden '06.

But the thing that seems odd to me, is that it seems that players in rpgs don't appear to be able to seperate reality and the game. Why?

I mean i spend a lot of time playing, but i'm not that involved. Gaming is just a way to relax, I work Guidance and Control for the B-52 in the Air Force, so after working on that old pos jet all day I just wanna chill. I get in this game, I've never played an rpg before mind you, but people are like obsessive.

I have no real life in real life, or anywhere else for that matter.

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you mean about "unable to separate reality and the game."
The discussions you see are no different than the discussions kids have about who'd win in a fight between Godzilla or King King (Godzilla, hands-down BTW). They're no more heated than people get over their Superbowl predictions.
Some might call it, "passion."

The ones who take it seriously to the point of hostility are, likely, the youngest players. Which should come as no surprise. We get all types in the GW community. A vocal minority doesn't speak for everyone. The fact that it's a community is probably what distinguishes it from Battlefield 2 or Madden '06 (how is this one anyway?).

You just basically did the same thing as if someone asked a tree why it grows. Unfortunately, no one is more protective of their madness than Rpg gamers. They will list 950 billion defenses against your idealism, but provide no actual answer.

Goood thread. Good question. But, in all seriousness bud, good fraggin luck with your quest to understand the madness of MANY human beings wanting to be that which they are not...

Priorities, discipline, and time management. Many don't have this. I struggle at times as well (I'm not perfect). Escape from reality. Maybe their lives suck or they are constantly depressed and use RPG's as an escape.

Off topic: How is Battlefield 2? I'm really interested in it. Supposed to be a really good game. How does it compare to games like Counterstrike and Rainbow six/Ghost Reacon?

Tree's don't talk back. The only thing talking to a tree will get you is an injection of a potent antipsychotic.

Why do people dress up at Halloween (other than the candy hijacking)? Why do we dress to "fit in"? Why do I suddenly adopt an accent if I'm conversing with someone from another region or country? Why do we read novels?

Escapism is escapism. Some people go out and act like John Travolta on the dance floor. Some people wear funny clothes and get paid to run around in Ringling Bros. Circus. Some people pretend they're smart and teach. Some people relax by putting themselves in other's shoes. *shrugs* I like it and don't actually -need- to defend it so PFFFFFFFFFT.

The great thing about GW in my opinion is the fact that it DOES combine reality with "gaming". Economy, strategy, hard work; these are the most basic things that this game combines. But i think the best part of the combination of reality and GW is the friends. Since the patch i have been farming the greens, and selling them at the ridiculous prices these ppl are offering. Through this i have made 4 good acquaintances, mature people who i talk to even when im not farming with them. Also, i have several real friends who play the game and are in my guild. 3 of my roomates, and another housemate of mine in college play almost daily. We talk about the real world in the game, and the game in the real world (though not always of course). In the right hands this game is amazing for the very reason against which you posted this. Oh, and im 20, not 12. - Danny Lohner-
